Nicholas Hoult is heading to Hogwarts — and he’s bringing plenty of charm with him.
HBO has officially cast the Superman star as Gilderoy Lockhart for Season 2 of its upcoming Harry Potter series. Hoult will take over the role previously played by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
The casting gives fans their first major look at who will fill one of the most memorable roles from Harry’s second year at Hogwarts.
Nicholas Hoult Is the New Gilderoy Lockhart
Lockhart is the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor introduced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Unlike many of Hogwarts’ teachers, Lockhart is obsessed with his own fame. He’s a bestselling author, celebrity wizard and expert at turning almost every conversation back toward himself.
That makes Hoult an especially interesting choice.
The actor has already shown that he can play both charming and unsettling characters, with recent roles including Lex Luthor in Superman and the title monster in Nosferatu.
Now he’ll have to bring something completely different to Hogwarts: a wizard who believes he’s the greatest hero in the room.
And he’s usually the only person who believes it.
Season 2 Will Enter the Chamber of Secrets
HBO’s second season will move into the events of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, continuing the television adaptation’s plan to explore the books in considerably more detail than the original movies could.
The first season is set to debut at Christmas 2026, with HBO confirming that the series will stream on HBO Max where available.
The main trio will once again be played by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron.
The larger cast already includes major names such as John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu as Snape.
Adding Hoult to that lineup gives Season 2 another recognizable star — and one who should fit Lockhart’s larger-than-life personality particularly well.
Why This Casting Matters
There’s a lot riding on HBO’s Harry Potter series.
The original movies remain hugely popular, meaning every new casting announcement invites immediate comparison with the actors who played these characters before.
Hoult has the difficult job of following Kenneth Branagh, whose flamboyant performance made Lockhart one of the most entertaining characters in Chamber of Secrets.
But the television format gives HBO more room to explore the character.
The series has already generated enormous interest. HBO’s first official trailer reportedly collected more than 277 million organic views in its first 48 hours, becoming the company’s most-watched trailer ever.
That means the pressure is already enormous.
For Hoult, however, Lockhart could be one of the most entertaining roles in the entire reboot.
The new Hogwarts professor has arrived — and he probably thinks everyone is already a fan.
